Canon Alberic's Scrap-book: (The Scrap-book of Canon Alberic) first published in National Review XXV, no. 145 (March 1895), 132-141; reprinted in Ghost Stories of an Antiquary (1904). Written in 1892 or 1893; read to the Chitchat Society in Cambridge on 28 October 1893.

Lost Hearts: first published in Pall Mall Magazine VII, no. 32 (December 1895), 639-647; reprinted in Ghost Stories of an Antiquary (1904). Written in 1892 or 1893; read to the Chitchat Society on 28 October 1893.

1904

The Mezzotint: first published in Ghost Stories of an Antiquary (1904).

The Ash-tree: first published in Ghost Stories of an Antiquary (1904).

Number 13: first published in Ghost Stories of an Antiquary (1904). Written prior to Christmas 1903 when it was read at the King's College gathering. In the introduction to The Collected Ghost Stories of M.R. James, MRJ dates the story to 1899, but Michael Cox thinks 1900 is more likely.

Count Magnus: first published in Ghost Stories of an Antiquary (1904). Probably written in 1901 or 1902.

"Oh, Whistle, and I'll Come to You, My Lad": first published in Ghost Stories of an Antiquary (1904). Probably written in 1903; read at the King's College Christmas gathering in 1903.

The Treasure of Abbot Thomas: first published in Ghost Stories of an Antiquary (1904). Written in Summer 1904 to fill up the volume.

1910

The Stalls of Barchester Cathedral: (The Stalls of Barchester Cathedral: Materials for a Ghost Story) first published in Contemporary Review XCVII, no. 35 (April 1910), 449-460; reprinted in More Ghost Stories of an Antiquary (1911).

1911

A School Story: first published in More Ghost Stories of an Antiquary (1911). Written for the King's College Choir School in or before 1906.

The Rose Garden: first published in More Ghost Stories of an Antiquary (1911).

The Tractate Middoth: first published in More Ghost Stories of an Antiquary (1911).

Casting the Runes: first published in More Ghost Stories of an Antiquary (1911).

Martin's Close: first published in More Ghost Stories of an Antiquary (1911).

The Haunted Dolls' House: first published in The Empire Review XXXVIII, no. 265 (February 1923), 91-101; reprinted in A Warning to the Curious (1925). Written for Queen Mary's Dolls' House in 1922.

After Dark in the Playing Fields: first published in College Days 10 [Eton ephemeral] (28 June 1924), 311-312, 314; reprinted in The Collected Ghost Stories of M.R. James (1931).

There Was a Man Dwelt by a Churchyard: first published in Snapdragon [Eton ephemeral] (6 December 1924), 4-5; reprinted in The Collected Ghost Stories of M.R. James (1931).

Wailing Well: first published by Mill House Press, Stanford Dingley, 1928; reprinted in The Collected Ghost Stories of M.R. James (1931). Written in 1927 and first read to the Eton Boy Scouts' camp at Worbarrow Bay, Dorset, on 27 July 1927.

1929

Rats: first published in At Random [Eton ephemeral] (23 March 1929), 12-14; reprinted in Shudders (1929, ed. Cynthia Asquith); and in The Collected Ghost Stories of M.R. James (1931).

1931

The Experiment: (The Experiment: A New Year's Eve Ghost Story) first published in Morning Post (31 December 1931), 8d-f; first reprinted in The Thrill of Horror (1975, ed. Hugh Lamb).

1933

The Malice of Inanimate Objects: first published in The Masquerade 1 [Eton ephemeral], no. 1 (June 1933), 29-32; first reprinted in Ghosts & Scholars 6 (1984), 1-5. On the G&S web site here.

1936

A Vignette: first published in London Mercury 35 (November 1936), 18-22; first reprinted in The Sorceress in Stained Glass and Other Ghost Stories (1971, ed. Richard Dalby). Written in 1935.

1985

A Night in King's College Chapel: first published in Ghosts & Scholars 7 (1985), 1-5. Possibly written as early as 1892. On the G&S web site here.

1990

The Fenstanton Witch: first published in Ghosts & Scholars 12 (1990), 1-6; revised version on the Ghosts & Scholars web site and in The Haunted Dolls' House and Other Ghost Stories (2006, ed. S.T. Joshi). Possibly written around 1924 as some aspects of it slightly resemble "There Was a Man Dwelt by a Churchyard"; certainly written before 1929 when it was mentioned in "Stories I Have Tried to Write".

1993

John Humphreys (unfinished story): first published in Ghosts & Scholars 16 (1993), 1-10; revised version in The Ghosts & Scholars M.R. James Newsletter 11 (2007), 11-20. Written at some point before "Mr Humphreys and His Inheritance" in 1911.

1996

Marcilly-le-Hayer (story draft): first published in Ghosts & Scholars 22 (1996), 33-34; revised version in The Ghosts & Scholars M.R. James Newsletter 10 (2006), 27-30. Written before 1929 when it was mentioned in "Stories I Have Tried to Write".

1999

Speaker Lenthall's Tomb (incomplete story): partial version first published in The Fenstanton Witch and Others: M.R. James in Ghosts & Scholars (1999, ed. Rosemary Pardoe), 26-28; almost complete version published in The Ghosts & Scholars M.R. James Newsletter 7 (2005), 4-12. Written before 1900; probably in the latter half of the 1890s.

The Game of Bear (unfinished story): first published in The Fenstanton Witch and Others: M.R. James in Ghosts & Scholars (1999, ed. Rosemary Pardoe), 23-25; revised version in The Ghosts & Scholars M.R. James Newsletter 12 (2007), 10-12.
